Married and family represent a close-knit unit that originates from the connection between a man and a woman. With the arrival of children, this unit expands and becomes more resilient. From a human perspective, marriage is an inherent necessity, formalized through a legal agreement, ensuring its legitimacy and recognition under the law.
In Islamic principles, establishing a family is regarded as sacred. The Prophet and the Imams have indicated that marriage resembles a structure that Allah holds dear. It is conveyed that among all structures in Islam, none is cherished by Allah more than the institution of marriage.
Islam underscores the significance of adhering to the Sunnah of marriage. Amirul Mukminin Ali Bin Abu Tholib remarked that marriage is part of the Prophet’s sunnah, with the Prophet himself declaring that it is his sunnah, and those who disdain his sunnah are not included in his ummah.
The Islamic perspective on marriage is profoundly different from a simple animalistic impulse or desire. Islam motivates its adherents to coexist in marriage as a means of achieving purification, renouncing sin, and fostering a closer relationship with Allah.
Marriage is regarded as one of the most esteemed sunnahs in Islam. Imam Shâdiq indicated that two rak’ahs of prayer performed by a spouse outweigh the devotion of a single man who engages in night prayers and daytime fasting.
Moreover, marriage is viewed as a medium for both physical and mental well-being. Healthy sexual relationships and the satisfaction of sexual desires are seen as intrinsic needs that foster physical and mental equilibrium. Neglecting sexual fulfilment can lead to various health issues.
In Islam, marriage is also perceived as a means to promote the security of the social fabric. By marrying at the appropriate age, individuals can steer clear of pitfalls such as idleness and moral decline, contributing to a safer and more harmonious environment.
From an Islamic standpoint, expanding one’s progeny is considered a crucial purpose of marriage. The Prophet articulated that marriage can bestow blessings, and Allah can grant the gift of children who proclaim ‘Lâ Ilâha Illâ Allah’, shaking the earth with their presence.
Lastly, marriage offers the joy of life itself. Islam acknowledges sexual pleasure as permissible and potentially rewarding when pursued with the intention of drawing closer to Allah. Thus, marriage transcends mere formalities or societal status; it embodies the essence of nurturing a significant and responsible family.
